Award winning kids' musician Alex Mitnick, best known for his work with Alex & The Kaleidoscope Band, has been a dad for just over a year. As a teacher and entertainer of children for the last 15 years Alex could always appreciate the perspective of the child but now, as a parent, the journey has come full circle. From the early mornings to the sleepless nights, and all that unfolds in the first months of life, songs like Love Is All It Takes, Having A Party, and Music In My Heart, provide a joyful soundtrack to the amazing experience of becoming a parent.

"Love Songs For My Baby by Alex Mitnick and his multi-faceted Kaleidoscope Band, is filled with world-music infused rhythms on these 12 original songs. From the African-like call and response vocals of the opening "Oh My My, " to the friendly folk of "Feelin' Fine," and the Springsteen-ish balladry of "Morning Sun," Mitnick brings a gentle sense of storytelling to his work. Elsewhere, is the Soweto guitars and Latin rhythms of "Love is All It Takes," the John Sebastian-style easy going "Hey Hey Lyla," and the joyful reggae of "Music In My Heart (Miles Smiles)."

The over-all feeling of the CD is unapologetically positive and upbeat, as demonstrated by "Beatle-esque" "Having A Party," the quiet country-tinged tale of anticipating a parent's coming home from work on "Honey Pie," and the steel guitar sweetened song of the title track's hero "Baby." Tabla drums spice up the rhythms of the love song "So Deep," a Clapton-like guitar accents the light reggae of "Diamond," and the closing "In the Right Place" floats along a lovely pedal steel line.

Mitnick's melodic tenor continues to remind this reviewer of the joys of the Lovin' Spoonful, with shades of Paul Simon and Richard Shindell thrown in for good measure. He is obviously well acquainted with the music of Simon, and shows pleasing influence of Dire Straits and other rock bands, but he has managed to synthesize all of this into a very pleasing original sound. A lovely and gentle celebration of the joys of childhood (and parenting) will be a welcomed addition to your music library."

Since March, his new TV show, Alex & The Kaleidoscope, has been airing weekly on the NYC-TV Life network, available to more than 18 million homes in the New York metropolitan area. Each episode of Alex & The Kaleidoscope, which Alex created with Emmy-winning director Jarett Bellucci and Emmy-winning producer Angelina Ciccala, focuses on a specific theme, such as trains, a zoo, an aquarium, or a museum. As host, Alex visits each week's location, chats with friendly experts, learns some fascinating facts, and celebrates each subject with live action and animated music videos, dance pieces, and live concert footage featuring Alex & The Kaleidoscope Band.
